    thoughts... hm.
first, leave it to the coen brothers to take a huge bite out of something seemingly controversial to the movie geeks of the world.
second, if they're going to be truer to the book and are actually shooting for making a film of the book rather than a remake of the previous movie, i think they're going to be ok.
third, if jeff bridges isn't trying to be the Duke in this movie, but actually trying to be the character in the book, it'll be ok.

sure, a lot of superficial movie-goers (doubtful that most of those have even seen the original) would poo-poo the guys for even thinking about remaking a john wayne movie - john wayne is still at the point in pop culture that NO ONE will be able to do him or his movies justice to those who would go see it - but it doesn't sound like this is what that is meant to be.

any director in their right mind would wait a few generations to touch a john wayne movie for remake just so they wouldn't have to compete with the way his personality permeated society and pop culture, so whoever is watching it wouldn't have a frame of reference.
i highly doubt you'll ever see a remake of McLintock! or El Dorado or Chisum or Hondo or anything wholly Duke-centric. the closest thing you'll see to a remake of any Duke movie is something where it was obviously an ensemble cast - the longest day, they were expendable, just about any of his WWII movies - where john wayne wasn't the only thing or actor carrying the movie.

    i think thats it. :)
