where i'm going to start. REALLY. and i don't even know how to begin to decide.
i found this website that has airfares to western europe under $500 and oceania under $850 which is SUPER great considering i'm leaving from austin.

Isn't the weather better in Oceania right now? You can do Europe & the Northern Hemisphere when Winter is done? Or do you want to go play in the rainy wintery weather in places? I guess that's how I would decide. Another factor - is it cheaper for you to go off to Antarctica or one of the major must sees from one of these places later?
ReplyDeleteAh - another thing I would look at is the prices from Europe or Oceania to the other place - does the cost end up being better to go from US to Europe to New Zealand or from the US to Australia to Europe?
ReplyDeleteyes, it's summertime in oceania right now, but that also means high season for tourists and higher prices for everything.
ReplyDeletei've been reading up on europe in the wintertime and everyone is saying it's the time to go because there are far fewer tourists and everything is usually cheaper and easier to get into. locals are more willing to haggle re: prices of stuff and they're a lot more friendly because they have more time on their hands to chat. i'm thinking i'm going to start there, but there are so many places to start from there. :)
and, pretty much the only place to embark on the antartica biggie from is chile. that trip is going to cost $10K minimum, so i'm either going to have to find a eurpoean sugar daddy or wait a little bit after i get back (if i get back) and get some work in and save up a bit.
Get a map book and open it to the page you want and go there.
ReplyDeletePick the start of a rail line.
Get a map and put it on the wall and throw darts - take the first 3 darts, draw a triangle, and go somewhere in there.
I have heard amazing things about Prague recently. :)
Btw, you should be prepared for me to hate you just a little through all of this. But hate you with lots of love of course. :)
the SOLE problem with europe in the winter is that i have to buy a cold weather wardrobe. and it has to be small. and it, apparently, has to have a lot of cashmere because that's light and warm. and my best bet is for it to be all black. i'm SO not an all black kind of person.
ReplyDeletesurprisingly, victoria's secret has a lot of cashmere/silk blend sweaters and stuff for pretty darn inexpensive. just for shits and giggles i put into an online cart about 3/4s of what i would need and it came out to about $300 for the following: 2 silk and cashmere cardigans (i can use these alone too, not just over stuff), 1 cashmere and silk v-neck sweater, 1 tshirt, 1 long sleeved tshirt, 1 pair of black pants, 1 black dress and 3 cashmere and cotton camis (for under everything). that's not too bad, right? should i go for it and buy?
after that, i would just need a pair of jeans - i'm going to go and get myself a nice pair at a place that knows what they're supposed to look like - a pair of walking shoes (already found them for $120, not too bad), socks and a hat.
thoughts?
You're missing is a scarf, which is a MUST in Europe in Winter in my opinion, and totally like a weirdly obsessive accessory for them. This could be your color.
ReplyDeleteI would also think you should pack some panties and a bra, but maybe not. :)
I would say maybe 1 more long sleeve and 1 more T-shirt, because those are going to be staples, and you'll want to be able to wear one while one dries, and the camis I don't think will cut it for arm coverage, and then you can mix and match them with the cardigans and be layered. Maybe only get 2 Camis.
What shoes will you wear with the dress?
Will your kick ass walking shoes match the black pants?
I found this as well:

i've got 2 scarves and 1 of those black jersey skirts that you can fold the waistband down on that i'm bringing and i've got the underwear and bra down too. i found a fleece shell at old navy for $15 today and i got it because it's usually $30 and i don't think fleece differs if it has "north face" written on it or "old navy".
ReplyDeletei added one more short sleeved tshirt, and not another long sleeve because i figure i already have enough long sleeved stuff, but what if it actually starts to get warm? :)
i have a pair of black flats that i am bringing with me - they're borns, so obscenely comfortable - and they were the ONLY pair of cute "comfort" shoes i could find. http://www.zappos.com/born-adele i did NOT pay $89 for them. only $60. and my kick ass walking shoes are PURPLE so i can get out of the black rut. http://www.zappos.com/allrounder-by-mephisto-blanka-purple-suede the place i found has them for $127 and a 10% off coupon and free shipping and no taxes - sweet!
my only concern about the cashmere for the travel is the durability of it after washing over and over. Do you think that will be a problem?
ReplyDelete2 things make me think it'll be ok:
ReplyDelete1. they're blends with stronger fabrics, so that will reinforce it all
2. i'm going to be hand-washing most of the time, so i doubt it'll be as rough on everything as regular washing machines.
ps - i just reconsidered on the dress since i have the skirt. yes?
correct, if you have the skirt, I would say ditch the dress.
ReplyDeleteAlso - you'll be super thankful for the fleece shell. It was attached to my body for 2 weeks.
ReplyDeletesweet... with a few tweaks - 1 add'l short-sleeve for a total of 3 short sleeves, removal of 1 cami and dress removal - AND free shipping and 20% off coupon codes i found online, i'm at $220.
ReplyDeletei'm buying.
wheeeeee! Awesome!
ReplyDeleteA heads up that they also do a semi-annual sale the first week of every January - you can/should make a pass back by their website for any huge deals or things you could send back or swap for better prices.
ps - i really want this to come with me...

maybe it'll be back in stock by the end of the year. heh.
It's adorable! But it seems as bulky as everything else you just bought and less flexible in the wardrobe. Maybe it is out of stock because you will find something else you want/need more!
